Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction by Dr. Myra Weiss
MBSR is a self-directed way to live your life more skillfully, not to become
a heavy-duty meditator. MBSR facilitates awareness and control in your life.
Awareness permits choice in how to respond and influence circumstances, as opposed
to being carried away by currents of stress.
To be mindful is to develop skills in attention and moment-to-moment awareness.
Anyone can learn to transform stressful situations by going through them in
order to get past them. This is accomplished by using awareness of one's breath
and body to achieve skills of relaxed observing and clarity.
* This program is a modified version of the program developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn
and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center Stress Reduction
Clinic.

Myra Weiss, a doctoral-level clinical social worker, has practiced psychotherapy
and meditation for over 25 years. She is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical
Social Work (BCD), has reached the highest rank in family therapy teaching (Approved
Supervisor, American Assoc. for Marriage and Family Therapists-AAMFT) and is
a Member of the American Family Therapy Assoc. (AFTA).
Dr. Weiss has completed the Professional Training for Healthcare
Professionals and the Teaching Development Intensive, taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn,
Saki Santorelli & senior faculty from UMass Center for Mindfulness/Stress
Reduction. ABOUT COURSE & ENROLLING
- Will this program help a "mainstream" person to reduce stress from
the workplace?
Yes, practice creates an ability to respond, rather than react, to troubling
thoughts and feelings, in any environment.
- What kind of illnesses would this be good for?
Relieving bodily tension that occurs with chronic physical and/or emotional
conditions. Research has indicated that this course has lowered levels of depression,
anxiety, panic states, and physical pain.
- How long and how often do I have to practice relaxation techniques for it
to be effective?
During the course, a commitment of 20-minutes of daily practice is recommended.
Naturally, the more practice, the greater the change. After finishing the MBSR
course, many people successfully maintain their changes, simply doing a couple
moments of practice throughout the day.
- Do I have to use a mantra?
No. Awareness of one's breath and body facilitates a shift towards moment-to-moment
awareness of self and others. This technique increases concentration, flexibility,
insight and calmness.
- What is the time commitment to learn MBSR?
The course consists of eight (8) sessions, over a period of 8 - 12 weeks. It
is taught in individual sessions or in small groups of no more than eight people
.
- What would keep me doing MBSR, after I finish the 8-week course?
A great deal of progress occurs for people enrolled in the optional monthly
graduate-group sessions, offered at a reduced fee.
- As someone who travels a lot, can I do this course when I'm away from home?
Yes. MBSR is easily taught in individual sessions and, therefore, can accommodate
time parameters of the learner. The two practice audio tapes (Guided Body Scan
and Guided Sitting Meditation) can be used anywhere/anytime.
-How much stress will this course cause me?
Learners generally find the short term stress of committing to daily practice
during the program well worth the long-term stress relief.
- Cost of the course?
The MBSR course is eight sessions: $100 for each individual session; $50 per
group session. Financial help can be discussed.
- Can I have an example of what the course will be like?
